Choosing the right wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you’ll make during your wedding planning. Long after the day is over, the photographs will be what allow you to relive those moments with your family and friends. But with so many photographers available, how do you know who is truly the right fit?
After photographing weddings for more than two decades, I’ve seen firsthand what makes a photographer a great choice for a couple—and what couples sometimes overlook when making their decision.
Consider the Experience You Want
Photography is not just about images—it’s also about the experience you and your guests will have during the wedding.
Some photographers take a very passive approach and simply document the day from the sidelines. Others take a more proactive role by guiding moments, helping organize portraits, and making sure the couple looks their best in every frame.
Personally, I believe in doing both.
I capture candid moments as they naturally unfold, but I’m also proactive when needed—fluffing a dress, adjusting a pose, or finding the best lighting to make sure everything looks perfect.
Your photographer will spend more time with you on your wedding day than almost any other vendor, so their personality and approach matter more than many couples realize.
A Great Photographer Is Also a Problem Solver
An experienced photographer is constantly thinking ahead.
For example:
- If the sun is too harsh, they’ll adjust the location or angle.
- If lighting becomes difficult, they’ll introduce flash or modify the setup.
- If the timeline runs behind, they’ll help reorganize the flow of photos.
Over the years, I’ve learned that every wedding is a new problem to solve creatively, and preparation makes all the difference.
Knowing the venue, planning photo locations, and anticipating potential challenges allows the day to run much smoother for the couple.
Helping Couples Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera
"We’re not good in front of the camera."
The truth is that most people simply need a little guidance and encouragement.
A good photographer helps break that barrier by:
- Giving simple posing direction
- Demonstrating poses when needed
- Using humor to break the ice
- Showing couples previews of how great they look on camera
Sometimes couples who feel shy at first become incredibly natural once they relax and interact with each other. The goal is to make the process feel effortless so your personality shines through in the photographs.
Creating Special Moments Without Taking You Away From the Celebration
For example, first look sessions often involve carefully positioning the bride and groom so they don’t accidentally see each other beforehand. These moments can be incredibly emotional and intimate when done right.
Another common example is night photography. Couples often want a few dramatic night portraits, but they also want to return quickly to the celebration.
The key is working efficiently—capturing beautiful images in just a few minutes so the couple can get back to enjoying their wedding.
The Right Photographer Should Feel Like the Right Fit
You want someone who:
- Has the experience to handle any situation
- Produces consistent, beautiful work
- Makes you feel comfortable and confident
- Guides you throughout the day without overwhelming you
When those elements come together, your wedding photography becomes more than just pictures—it becomes a meaningful part of the entire experience.
Start With Experience and Reputation
Look for consistent themes in reviews such as:
- Professionalism and punctuality
- Ability to guide couples throughout the day
- Calmness under pressure
- A positive, friendly attitude with guests
These details reveal a lot about how the photographer will perform on your wedding day.
Look for Consistency in Their Work
Ask to see full wedding galleries, not just highlight reels. This allows you to see how the photographer performs in different lighting conditions, venues, and parts of the day.
A strong photographer should be able to produce consistent results whether they are shooting:
- In bright sunlight
- Indoors with limited light
- During sunset
- At night on the dance floor
Consistency shows that the photographer understands lighting, composition, and how to adapt to different situations.
